The 2007 Young Arts Awards

The demise of the Arts Academy has given us the opportunity to look at alternate ways to support Young Arts in Brisbane. It was noticed that there was a gap in funding for programs for younger, primary aged children. With this in mind it was decided to make grants of $300 each toward projects at three schools in economically challenged areas.

At Carina State School students in years 1 - 5 are undertaking investigation into art works that focus on multiculturalism from around the world and will design and paint a permanent mural for the school's basketball court/assembly quadrangle.

Mt Gravatt State School offers a Visual Arts program for all students in years prep - 3. This program involves students working for 40 minutes with a practising artist/illustrator, they are taught art fundamentals through extensive practical activities and the study of works of famous artists. The school has established an art room and our donation has been used to augment it’s initial fitout.

Geebung State School has an Art Program for students in years prep -7. Our donation was utilised toward the school's Art Program at all year levels.

We anticipate expanding our support for Primary School Art Programs in 2008.

The 2006 Margaret North Young Arts Awards

Funds bequeathed by the Brisbane River ADFAS Society’s founding Chairman, the late Margaret North, made fees available for three years commencing in 2004 for the most promising young student under the age of 18 years in Fine Art/Design and Illustration to undertake one further year of study at the Arts Academy based at Balmoral State High School. Two further awards of $150 are made to the leading arts secondary school graduates between 14 and 18 years of age in Fine Art, and Design and Illustration respectively. Unfortunately the course fees award was not made at the end of 2006 as a consequence of uncertainty about the future of the Arts Academy. The Director informed the Society that Education Queensland withdrew part of its funding in 2006 and will cease funding altogether by 2008.

However the two secondary awards from the bequest were made in 2006. At a low-key ceremony held at the Arts Academy premises on 22 November, the retiring Chairman, Philip Courtenay, presented the award for Fine Art to Amy Crow of Grade 12, Lourdes Hill College, and the award for Design and Illustration to Lalita Stone Grade 11, Home Schooled.
