Melbourne - The Johnston Collection

The Johnston Collection is an international collection and here in the Green Drawing Room you can see some highlights: an exceptional Louis XV Bureau Plat, a significant collection of portrait miniatures and an enviable range of furniture in the style of the three great 18th century English designers, Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton. The Johnston Collection is a wonderful teaching collection and the ADFAS guides play an important role in ensuring visitors not only take away new insights into the decorative arts, but that they enjoy the intimacy of experiencing the house in small groups of eight people.

The Johnston Collection is spread across three properties in the leafy residential suburb of East Melbourne. The Collection House, Fairhall, is the former home of WR Johnston, an antique dealer and collector who left his entire estate for the education of others. The house is rearranged three times a year and under the tutelage of the Director, Nina Stanton, the Guides are involved in the development of the different tours throughout the year.

Visitors are welcomed on arrival at The Johnston Collection in the main Administrative Building. Here in plush surroundings visitors are served tea and coffee by the guides who give a short introduction to the experience to follow.

By May of 2007 the guides will also be conducting tours of The Gallery, the Johnston Collection’s new exhibition space. Here exhibitions which support Mr Johnston’s collection will be held, starting off with the hanging of a private contemporary art collection from Sydney which reflects aspects of Mr Johnston’s Collections. This inaugural show will be followed by exhibitions of porcelain, silver and glass FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS. It is an exciting new venture. As Paddy Leach, Co-ordinator of the Johnston Collection ADFAS guides said recently: “Volunteering at the Johnston Collection is immensely stimulating and always richly rewarding”.
